Duplicate but with a different DVIDS ID. Not sure how we should best handle the merge. - Jmabel ! talk 00:46, 15 June 2026 (UTC)

Unfortunately it is a rabbit hole. As the SHA values do not match, there's no mediawiki way to find these 'almost but not quite' digitally identical copies. A lot of time was spent automating image hashing, but it is an expensive process and does not eliminate human intervention to decide the best way to merge.
Yes, the backlog really is over 20,000 files and 9 years old. However it remains a low priority issue compared to other enigmatic Commons puzzles.
WRT this example, they were released by the military one week apart according to the metadata. Picking the first one officially released on their system seems a fine choice considering neither is currently in use. (talk) 02:00, 15 June 2026 (UTC)
Semi-related: do you know about Commons:International Standard Content Code? Might be relevant for some of the work you do. - Jmabel ! talk 19:05, 15 June 2026 (UTC)
This is interesting, thank you. As it seems to work as a Hamming space, so gives "distance", this is presumably a type of image hash but seems to be used as a fingerprint, which may not be guaranteed with other methods. Looking at the database website though, it might be on an indefinite beta status, but worth a bit of research and reading for my education. (talk) 08:13, 16 June 2026 (UTC)

Thank you

I just wanted to say, "Thank you," for all of the images you have made accessible. I count on them to complete family history books for my clients and each time I see "Fæ" pop up, I send a bit of gratitude your way. With full attribution to you, your time and effort show up in the analog world, too. ~2026-35350-40 (talk) 14:31, 17 June 2026 (UTC)

This seems to be a part of a mass upload of Mapillary images.

As these were being uploaded I'd been adding | other_fields = {{information field|Academic context|Geospatial street-level imagery from external site.}}, so these were not seen as random indiscriminaate uploads of 'random' locations and verges.

However the uploads seem to be faster than I can cope with manually. Any chance of seeing if something like Faebot is able to do the additions as the files are uploaded? Thanks. ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 20:00, 20 June 2026 (UTC)

@DaxServer: Would this be a suitable minor addition to the curator, or is it left for others to tack it on if wanted? (talk) 20:24, 20 June 2026 (UTC)

for this upload- Thanks. The hope was that the addition could made to related uploads. These are in scope, but given some patrollers... I felt it was reasonable to indicate why they were in fact not just random verge-side images. ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 14:25, 21 June 2026 (UTC)

As the one who uploaded this file, is there any way for you to extract a larger version? The current one is almost unreadable. Nighfidelity (talk) 13:45, 1 July 2026 (UTC)

The easy solution is to look again at the pdf. The rendering on Commons is terrible and also on wikisource. Downloading the original pdf in browser or locally shows that it is possible to zoom by 200% and the text is quite readable.
However the technical issue is worth looking at. The task is to re-assemble a pdf using the orginal jp2 files (>700mb). This can be done in python using opencv to process the raw images, rotate them and squeeze into a pdf. This may be no better than the IA's process, but taking a look to satisfy my curiosity. Download takes a couple of minutes and processing another 15. This could not be mass emulated.
Bug1: system crashed trying to load 700+ page images into memory. Redoing in chunks. (talk) 14:53, 1 July 2026 (UTC)
Couple more bugs and it got built. At this size even uploading is a flaky process. The uncompressed version is the jp2 originals converted to jpgs at a default 95%. The scans are not cropped. This is native high resolution and not a good pdf to be used to share or read the book.
Breadcrumbs: jp2 scans are sideways, so need rotating. The set can be downloaded to a local tar and unzipped. The jp2 originals can be edited in opencv to be rotated and resaved, or reformed into a new pdf. To avoid memory problems this was done in 50 page chunks and then these chunked pdfs added together using pypdf. This process could be automated but it's intensive and gives a fat pdf. Individual jpeg versions of each page can be downloaded manually, or uploaded to Commons, by users if they really want, such as for a single illustration, or a reader can see in high resolution using the viewer on IA. (talk) 16:02, 1 July 2026 (UTC)
Thank you very much for your efforts, but is it me, or did it stop at page 400? Nighfidelity (talk) 17:13, 1 July 2026 (UTC)
Yes, have to check out why. (talk) 17:15, 1 July 2026 (UTC)
This was caused because of rerunning and the code presuming it had already finished chunking pdfs. Gone for a 70% jpg compression but still over 1GB. The system has been resisting uploading the file due to size. If it still has not uploaded tomorrow, we'll try compressing further. (talk) 21:28, 1 July 2026 (UTC)
Recompressed at 50% but still getting fails to upload despite size under 700mb. (talk) 12:35, 2 July 2026 (UTC)
Going via toolforge eventually completed the upload. Clearly for PDFs of this size, Commons does not behave well and takes a ridiculous amount of manual intervention. (talk) 15:00, 2 July 2026 (UTC)
Thanks! Nighfidelity (talk) 15:04, 2 July 2026 (UTC)

Repeatedly adding incorrect categories

Why did you add this category twice? I'm confused how it happened once, let alone again. ―Justin (koavf)TCM 16:12, 2 July 2026 (UTC)

It's part of a housekeeping task, mainly to find the 1 page pdfs but also the 1000+ page pdfs, which started off presuming everything in the scans from the IA category was there because of my uploading project. Only today found out that someone had made an uploading tool which used the same thing. The maintenance now is a lot slower as it checks the file history to work out for sure who the original uploader was before changing any categories. It should also revert wrong categorization, but it could be that this was the only one like that? -- (talk) 17:01, 2 July 2026 (UTC)
Got it. Thanks for circling back on the task. ―Justin (koavf)TCM 17:05, 2 July 2026 (UTC)

Invitation to the Wikimedia Commons Pre-Conference at the Wikimania 2026

Hello Fæ/Archive 115,

I want to invite you to participate at our Wikimedia Commons Pre-Conference at the Wikimania in Paris on July 21. If you want to join the pre-conference, please sign up on this page until July 7. Participation at the pre-conference is also possible without a ticket for the Wikimania. If you sign up before the deadline on July 7, you will get free access to the pre-conference day. Unfortunately, online participation will not be possible.

If you have something you want to present or you want to talk about at the pre-conference, please add it here, also until July 7.

There is also a service announcement for all photographers coming to Paris: Unfortunately, France has no freedom of panorama at all. Therefore, Commons does not accept photos of modern buildings, public art or light installations at night. Read more about the problem here.

Besides the invitation to our pre-conference, there is another announcement: We updated the membership list of the Commons Photographers User Group. The membership list is much smaller now and based on a template. This allows us to easily create message lists and statistics. Please have a look at your entry in the list and update it if needed.

Happy photographing! GPSLeo (talk) --MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 19:10, 2 July 2026 (UTC)
